Big River Farms is a Certified Organic vegetable farm located in Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota. The farm is operated by the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, Minnesota Food Association (MFA), which has provided training, land and resources to beginning immigrant and minority farmers for over 10 years. All proceeds from the farm are used to further MFA’s mission: to build a sustainable food system based on social, economic and environmental justice through education, training and partnerships.
Farmers from Big River Farms rotate at the market on a weekly basis. As part of Big River Farm’s role as an incubator farm, it not only teaches farmers how to grow crops, but also trains them in how to manage cash transactions, market bucks and tokens, track inventory, develop customer relations skills, and stall design.
As a certified-organic vegetable farm, Big River Farm uses many methods for pest, disease and weed management including: crop rotation, sanitation measures, selection of plant species and varieties based on disease and pest resistance, augmentation or introduction of predators or parasites of the pest species, development of habitat for natural enemies of pests, non-synthetic controls such as lures, traps, and repellents; mechanical cultivation, mowing, hand weeding, prevention of weed seed set, plastic mulch and so much more.
