Calvit’s Shrubs are handmade, natural drink mixers that add flavor and intrigue to soft drinks or cocktails made by Phil Calvit in South Minneapolis. Over a pound of fresh fruits or vegetables goes into the production of each 1-pint bottle of Calvit’s Shrubs. It’s an extremely ingredient-intensive production method that explains the intensely, authentically flavorful end product.
I started making shrubs when I wanted something interesting to drink after I quit drinking. I’ve never liked industrial soda pop, beer is meh and I quickly tired of ginger beer and ginger ale (although the love of ginger stayed with me). After an affable bartender served me a fabulous shrub-based mocktail, I did some research on the Google, starting knocking things about in my kitchen, and the results were so flavorful that friends, relatives and passersby were soon telling me, ‘Phil, you gotta sell this stuff!’
Calvit’s Shrubs feature unique flavors like Tomatillo/Tamarind with Hibiscus, Beet/Ginger with Szechuan pepper, and Thai Basil with Lime Leaf. They’re great with club soda for a dynamic soft drink, or with a shot of liquor for craft cocktails at home. They also make fantastic gifts.
