Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has proclaimed June 22 Brain Health Awareness Day to raise awareness of brain disease and safety. At the Market this Saturday, learn how a healthy diet can impact the health of your brain in our cooking demo, get your body moving with Market Yoga and line up for our annual helmet giveaway and fitting hosted by our neighbors at the American Academy of Neurology.
Starting at 8 a.m., AAN staff will fit and give away 1,000 free youth and adult bike helmets on the corner of 2nd St. South and Chicago Avenue. Visitors can take pictures with their helmets in a social media photo booth, enjoy AAN’s sensory garden and play the AAN-hosted piano from Pianos on Parade that will be on-site.
Keeping your brain healthy and protected is at the center of our mission at the American Academy of Neurology. We are honored to be able to give back to protect the safety of our community. We encourage everyone to wear a helmet as they enjoy the bike trails and city bike lanes.” -Catherine M. Rydell, CAE, CEO of the AAN
Before or after you get your helmet, head over to the lawn overlooking the Mississippi River for free outdoor Market Yoga with YogaFit Studios from 9 to 10 a.m. We all know that regular physical exercise and meditation are important for your body’s wellness, but did you know that they can also improve memory skills and mental health?
After you break a sweat at yoga, head inside the train shed for our brain health inspired cooking demonstrations with Market Chef Jill Holter. From 10 to 10:15 a.m. learn the fundamentals of cooking fish–a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are incredibly important for your body and brain–followed by Jills’s #WeeklyMarketMeal demo from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. showcasing her salmon kimchi pancakes with a dark leafy green salad and herb vinaigrette—samples and recipes available for attendees while supplies last!
You can learn more about concussion and brain health at BrainandLife.org, home of the American Academy of Neurology’s free patient and caregiver magazine focused on the intersection of neurologic disease and brain health.
