Classic Bouquets
Classic Bouquets of Avon, Minnesota is located on a dairy farm that has been in Jane and John Merdan’s family for 100 years. Married to a 5th generation farmer, Jane Merdan has a natural inclination to grow things of her own. Not only do the flowers add extra finance to the farm, it is also her passion. “I love flowers; I get quite excited by their beauty,” she said.
Jane started out selling dried flowers nearly 10 years ago, and is now selling fresh flowers at the market and through a community-supported agriculture (CSA) subscription. She travels 80 miles to the Mill City Farmers’ Market, and she said it is worth every mile. “I enjoy visiting with other vendors, other customers, and the whole atmosphere is fun,” she said. Classic Bouquets doesn’t just sell flowers, either. They also sell pumpkins and cherry jam when in season.
Although Jane does the majority of the work with the flowers, she is not alone in this venture as her farmer husband, John, tills the ground, lays biodegradable plastic mulch, and cuts the weeds. A plethora of flowers can be found on their farm: peonies, perennials, annuals snapdragons, lilies, sunflowers, and zinnias name a few.
